Costly, Liddle lead Race for a Cure field; benefit 5K/3K brings in over $3,300

Stanford’s Main Street and side streets were crowded with close to 100 runners and walkers, as well as their supporters early Saturday, April 1.
The draw was the annual Relay for Life Race for a Cure 5K Run/3K Walk which is held to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society (ACS).
The race participants left the starting line in front of the Stanford Christian Church admidst the cheers of onlookers, heading up East Main to West Main and then on up Danville Avenue and a winding route that stretched into the backstreets before ending up back on East Main.
While many individuals and teams may have been looking to set record times, the purpose of the event was to raise money for the ACS.
And raise money they did, with approximately $3,300 in donations raised for cancer research during the event.
It took less than 19 minutes for the first runner to cross the finish line in the 5K run. Willie Costly was all alone coming down the final stretch, winning the benefit run in a time of 18:56.
Jacob Liddle was the second to cross the finish line, covering the 3.1-mile distance in 21:33.
The top female runner, and the third-place overall finisher, was Emily Liddle. She was just four-hundredths of a second behind the second-place runner, posting a time of 21:37 to claim the women’s title.
