Tennis Pats, Lady Pats fall in opener

The Lincoln County tennis teams could not get their spring schedule off to a winning start, with visiting Casey County sweeping the Patriots and Lady Patriots in their season opener.
Roland Taylor, Jacob Baird and the doubles team of Ryan Montgomery and Taylor netted the only “W’s” for Lincoln in the match as Casey used hot play in the cold match to earn a 9-0 shutout in the girls match and a 6-3 victory in the boys.
Taylor, playing at the one seed in singles, defeated Luke Coffman of Casey 8-3 to get the Patriots off to a winning start. The Rebels would win four of the next five singles matches, though, to post a 4-2 lead going into doubles play. Casey went on to secure the win with a 2-1 edge in doubles competition. Taylor and Montgomery had the lone LCHS win in doubles, with the senior duo netting an 8-2 win over Casey’s top-seeded team of Austin Harne and Josh Underwood.
Jacob Baird notched the other singles win for the Pats, defeating  Casey’s Jackson Ponder 8-6 in the fifth-seeded match.
While the Lady Patriots came away without a match win, they did manage to collect a few game wins against Casey.
The No. 3 doubles team of Chandler Otto and Adie Hogue picked up the most games for Lincoln, collecting seven games before Casey’s Madi Meece and Ashley Johnson claimed the 9-7 win. In singles play, Alyea Towle challenged Casey’s Beck Cochran at the six seed before falling 8-5.
Even in the losses, Lincoln coach Allen Lewis was optimistic about the Patriots and Lady Patriots’ opening efforts.
“Good opening match for the boys with several matches that were closer than the scores show,” Lewis said. “It was a good measuring stick for the girls. We have a lot of young girls, so this was a test to see how we compare to one of the best teams in the region.”
