Patriots finish third in Gateway Classic

The Lincoln County boys’ basketball team finished 2-1 in the annual Gateway Classic at Montgomery County, closing play with a 62-44 win over its tourney host in the third-place consolation game on Thursday.
The Patriots (9-4) opened the tournament with a 69-45 win over Worthington Kilbourne (Columbus, Ohio) Tuesday then bowed to eventual champion Lexington Christian Academy 59-50 in the semifinal round Wednesday.

The Lincoln County Patriots capped off their run in the Gateway Classic with a 62-44 win over host Montgomery County in Thursday’s third-place consolation game.
Lincoln led just 14-12 after the first period, but scored 20 points in the second quarter to open up the game 34-22 at the half.
The Patriot offense didn’t let up in the third quarter, pouring in 16 points while holding the Indians to just seven points to make it 50-29 heading into the fourth.
Montgomery (4-10) would outpoint Lincoln in the final frame, but it would not be enough to overcome the Patriots’ big lead.
Tanner McAninch led the Patriots with 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including seven 3-pointers.
Lincoln had three players in double figures, with Noah Young scoring 19 points and Devin Alcorn finishing with 10 points. Young also had four rebounds and six assists. Phillips led Lincoln on the boards with five rebounds.
The Patriots were at 55 percent from the field in the win, going 23-for-42, 11-for-18 from 3-points out. They were 5-for-6 at the line. The Indians were at 46 percent on 16-for-35 shooting, 5-for-13 from 3. They were 7-for-12 from the line.
Tucker Norris led Montgomery with 19 points.

Semifinal Round

Lincoln’s march to the championship game of the Gateway Classic hit a wall Wednesday night.
Lexington Christian Academy denied the Patriots a berth in the title game by claiming a 59-50 victory.
Lincoln and LCA (11-2) were deadlocked at 11-all at the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles managed to edge ahead 28-26 at the half. 
LCA used an 18-14 third-quarter scoring edge to extend its lead to six, 46-40, then put the game away with a 13-10 finish.
Lincoln, which shot just 37 percent overall, on 19-for-52 shooting, was led by Noah Young with 16 points. Young, who also had three assists, was 6-for-18 overall, 3-for-9 from 3-point range.
The Patriots were 8-for-24 from 3 and 4-for-6 from the foul line.
The Eagles shot 56 percent, on 25-for-45 shooting, 4-for-16 from 3. They were 5-for-10 at the line.
Austin Hall had a game-high 23 points on 11-for-13 shooting to lead Montgomery. He also had seven rebounds. Carter Hendricksen followed with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Montgomery outrebounded Lincoln 33-25.

Lincoln 69, Kilbourne 45
Lincoln jumped on Worthington Kilbourne 18-10 in the first quarter and never looked back, using consistent double-digit scoring to defeat the Wolves 69-45.
Kilbourne was held to just eight points in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Lincoln put up 13 points in the period to post a 31-18 halftime lead.
The Wolves hit double digits in both the third (10) and fourth (17) quarters but Lincoln put up 38 second-half points to secure the win.
Lincoln shot 47 percent for the night, going 26-for-55 from the field, 5-for-21 from 3-point range. The Patriots were 12-for-14 at the foul line.
Noah Young led the Patriot scoring with 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting. He was 7-for-8 at the foul line. Chase Phillips was also in double figures, getting 19 points on a 7-for-10 night. He was 4-for-4 at the line.
Kilbourne shot just 30 percent from the field, going 17-for-57, 4-for-18 from 3. The Wolves were 7-for-18 at the line.
Thomas Wilson led the Wolves with 12 points and seven rebounds in a 40-37 win on the glass. Tanner McAninch had nine boards for Lincoln and Phillips had eight.
Young had four of Lincoln’s 14 assists, McAninch and Phillips each had three.
Riley Bodner had four blocked shots.
