Father’s Day is always a special day. But this year, the day has an even greater significance. This is the centennial observance of the beginning of Father’s Day.
One hundred years ago, on June 19, 1910, at the request of Mrs. John Bruce (Sonora Louise Smart) Dodd, the ministerial association of Spokane, Washington, led by the Rev. Conrad Bluhm, held the first Father’s Day observance of which there is record. Since that historic observance, the third Sunday in June has been set aside as a time for everyone throughout this land to recognize the importance of fatherhood and the significant role fathers have in the family, the church, the community, the nation and human society.
This special day is a poignant reminder that there is much more to being a good father than mere paternity.
Fathers carry the extraordinarily heavy responsibility that the sons and daughters they sire might, and in most cases will, grow up to be like them. While some of that likeness may be the result of genetics, much of it will be imitative.
In their formative years, when they are most impressionable, children by nature are great imitators. Therefore, they pattern their lives after the lives of those with whom they live and admire. For this reason, psychologists, sociologists and other professionals who work in the area of human relations are constantly reminding us in rather strong terms that reliable male role models in the homes of the land are absolutely essential if children are to grow up to be responsible adults.
The influence of good fathers is beyond calculation. In a critical period in human history that is characterized by instability, uncertainty and a breakdown in traditional values, good fathers can become a powerful and stabilizing force; they can become the preservers of society.
By living good lives, they will provide attitudes, character-producing action, and moral and ethical values that will determine the course of the lives of their children.
So, on Father’s Day, we honor and pay tribute to good fathers.
