Lincoln County’s Colin Hart takes the courts today (Thursday) in the 2010 Boys State Tennis Tournament in Lexington.
Hart, an eighth-grader, is making his second trip to state after finishing as 12th Region runner-up. He enters play unseeded.
The Lincoln netter begins state play at 8 a.m. at the UK Boone/Downing Tennis Center. He will be facing a seeded player in the first round of 64, matched up with No. 5 Maks Gold, a senior from Kentucky Country Day.
Casey County’s Kyle Jeffries, who defeated Hart in the 12th Region finals, also faces a seeded player in the opening round at state. He will face No. 9 Cyrus Moslemi, a junior from North Oldham at 8 a.m. today.
Hart and Jeffries would have to make the semifinals to play against each other.
Jimmy Roebker of Covington Catholic, the defending state champion, has been dethroned as the top-seeded player in the tournament. Roebker, a senior, who took the 2009 title with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Grant Roberts of Tates Creek, was given the No. 3 seed for this year’s tourney while Roberts, also a senior, was seeded No. 4.
Slipping past the two seniors to take the two top seeds are sophomores. Beck Pennington of Greenwood is seeded No. 1 and Alex Gomet of St. Xavier is seeded No. 2.
There is no charge for admission for today’s (Thursday’s) tourney action.
