Frith breaks school record in ‘Dream Mile’

May 20, 2010

The “Dream Mile,” which was run at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, featured 15 of the states top distance runners, by invitation only, based on times run this season, for both boys and girls. No preference was given as to A, AA, or AAA school size. All runners were seeded by best time.

Frith, who was Lincoln’s sole entry, was seeded seventh out of the 15-runner field with her 5:25.00 1600-meter time this year, which was also the Lincoln girls school record.

But that record would be broken by the end of the girls “Dream Mile.”

The LCHS junior lined up with all the runners for pre-race instructions and introductions, and then the gun sounded.

And, in less than 5:32.26, the girls race, which featured pace rabbits, runners designated to run 1/2 of the distance at a fast pace to pull the field into a quick brisk first-half pace, was over.

Dupont Manual’s Liz Anderson won the girls “Dream Mile” in 5:01.27. Frith finished 10th overall, completing the distance in a new school record time of 5:24.98.

“Emily ran hard and finished 10th in a prestigious field for a new Lincoln girls ‘mile,’” said Lincoln coach John Sanders. “This would also equate to a best in 1600-meter (slightly shorter than the one-mile run) by about 2 to 3 seconds.”

“Emily ran her best in a strong field, that’s all we can ask,” he said. “Emily is only a junior this year. She can return next season and run stronger and perhaps top her record from this year.”

The boys “Dream Mile” was won by Ryan Eaton of Greenwood, who posted a time of 4:16.22.
