Boys tennis region opens Friday at Berea

May 20, 2010

The Lincoln County High School boys tennis team will hit the courts at Berea College Friday as the Patriots open the post-season in the 12th Region Tournament.

Lincoln boasts one seeded player in the tournament, with Colin Hart, the Patriots’ No. 1 player, seeded No. 2 in singles competition.

The Lincoln eighth-grader, who was seeded No. 3 in last year’s tournament and moved on to play in the state tournament, is ranked second only to reigning regional champion Kyle Jeffries of Casey County. Jeffries eliminated Hart from title contention in last year’s semifinals 6-0, 6-1. In their only match this season, Hart challenged Jeffries to the end before falling 9-7.

Lincoln’s No. 1 player earned a bye through the first round as the tourney’s No. 2 seed. Hart, who is playing in his fourth regional tournament, will play the winner of the Jonathon Harville (Pulaski County) and Shoopman (McCreary Central) match in the second round Saturday morning.

Lincoln has two players entered in singles competition, with Brandon Jeffries going into the regional as the Patriots No. 2 player. His competition for the first round is Michael McChesney of Danville.

Lincoln has six players competing overall in the regional tournament, with Brandon Mitchell and Matt Holtzclaw making up Lincoln’s No. 1 doubles team and Joseph Vanhook and Dustin Price on court as the No. 2 team.

Holtzclaw and Mitchell will play Mercer County’s David Prince and Caleb Sheehan in the first round. Holtzclaw was defeated in the first round last year in doubles while teamed with Josh Calihan. This is the first year of competition for Mitchell.

Vanhook is also taking regional court with a new partner. Last year, Vanhook and Ethan Smith were ousted in the first round of regionals. Vanhook will try for a win again Friday as he and Price take on Rett Pigman and Chris Fuller of Mercer County.

The boys’ second round and quarterfinals will be played on Saturday and the semifinal and final matches on Sunday. All matches are on the courts of Berea College. Rain moves play to the Greg Adams Indoor Courts Center at EKU.
