Tourism director Todd quits after two months

March 4, 2010

The partnership formed last November between Stanford and the county to jointly promote tourism has run aground after three short months.

Angela Todd, who was hired in December to replace Mary Middleton who ran the Stanford Main Street Renaissance program and Luzia Foster, Lincoln’s Tourism director, abruptly resigned her position last week after only two months on the job.

Combining the two programs was one of Judge Executive Bill Demrow’s first priorities when he took office, and both the fiscal court and the city council saw potential benefits in combining the two programs and enjoying a unity of effort.

The two programs cost a total of $100,000 a year, and both civic bodies hoped to save $25,000 a year respectively sharing the cost of only one employee.

There are as many opinions as to what happened as there are addresses on Main Street, but Stanford Mayor Bill Miracle said, “I just think we went into this prematurely, we were really kind of winging it.”

Miracle doesn’t fault Todd for leaving the program, saying, “It just overwhelmed the person who took the position; it would have overwhelmed anyone.”

Both Miracle and Demrow indicated that they still thought a partnership was the way to go, but with Todd’s departure the county and city will, at least for now, be going it alone again in promoting tourism.

Indicating that the city will, once again hire a Main Street Renaissance coordinator, Miracle said that until the position is refilled, Stanford Arts Director Sandy Swett would be doing double duty. The fiscal court has yet to decide which direction the county will go.
