McKinney’s Carrier finalist for Teacher of the Year
October 22, 2009

FRANKFORT – James Carrier, a teacher at McKinney Elementary School, is one of nine teachers from around the state – three elementary school teachers, three middle school teachers and three high school teachers – that have been named finalists for the Kentucky Teacher of the Year award.

Carrier, a second-grade teacher at McKinney, is in contention for the Elementary Teacher of the Year award along with Jan Vaughn Horn of Shearer Elementary in Clark County and Phyllis Ray of Central Elementary in Graves County. As elementary teacher finalists, the three are also in the running for the 2010 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award.

Winners of the Elementary, Middle and High School Teacher of the Year awards, as well as the overall Kentucky Teacher of the Year award, will be announced at a ceremony in Frankfort Friday, Oct. 23, in the auditorium of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Middle school finalists are:

•Melissa Evans, Corbin Middle, Corbin Independent.

•Kerry Stephenson Conrad, Phillip A. Sharp Middle, Pendleton County.

•Melissa Singleton, Rockcastle County Middle, Rockcastle County.

In the high school category, the finalists are:

•Sally Robinson, Berea Community High, Berea Independent.

•Durell “Butch” Hamm, Larry A. Ryle High, Boone County.

•Ronda Fields, Ballard High, Jefferson County.

The nine finalists were among 24 educators who were named as 2010 Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Awards winners. They were chosen based on their scores from the first round of judging, which was conducted by a blue-ribbon panel of veteran educators. Applications included information on nominees’ teaching philosophies, teaching experiences, involvement in their respective communities and letters of recommendation.

Classroom visits and personal interviews with each of the nine finalists will result in the selection of the 2010 Elementary School, Middle School and High School Teachers of the Year. A culmination of these scores results in the selection of the 2010 Kentucky Teacher of the Year. This individual then will represent Kentucky in the 2010 National Teacher of the Year competition.

Ashland will present all 24 Teacher Achievement Award winners with cash awards and certificates at the ceremony in Frankfort. The three Teachers of the Year also will receive custom-designed glassware commemorating their accomplishments, and all 24 educators will be honored at a special luncheon that day.

The Kentucky Teacher Awards program combines the best elements of the Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Awards and the Kentucky Teacher of the Year programs. This marks the ninth year that the Department of Education and Ashland have joined together to honor Kentucky educators.
