No fish tale here
September 2, 2009
Laura Mae Stewart, 84, of Stanford recently caught one big fish – a 30+ pound catfish.
Stewart was told once by the owner of the Stanford pond she frequently fished (who wished to remain nameless) that there was a prize fish in the pond. The owner added that he’d pay a large amount to her if she ever caught it.
After many unsuccessful attempts to snag the prize fish, the avid fisherwoman admitted she was beginning to doubt the fish existed but, because of her love of fishing – not because of her desire to catch the fish – she continued to fish in the pond.
That persistence would be rewarded.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Deborah, Stewart’s daughter, said that her mother came to the porch of her home, out of breath saying “Come and help me. I can’t carry this big fish by myself.”
Yeah, right,” Deborah responded. However, Stewart kept insisting, saying “I’m not lying. I’m not lying.”
Deborah followed Stewart to where the fish was and there were already people gathering around to look at her catch. Neighbors had come out to check out the fish she’d caught and some were taking pictures.
At the center of the crowd was Stewart’s catch, the prize 30+ pound catfish.
“She told me it was too heavy for her to carry and I could see why,” Deborah said. “She said she walked it some because it was so heavy and then she just reached in, grabbed it by the gills and pulled it out.”
After the labor of baiting and hauling the fish in, the pond owner had an offer for Stewart. He told Stewart that he would give her $100 if she’d throw the fish back in the pond.
So what do you think she did?
She took the money, of course. After all, Stewart said that catching the fish was fun and it’d be a shame if she couldn’t have the chance to catch it again.
“I’ve waited a long time to catch it,” she said. “I don’t mind to wait ‘til I catch that big ole’ fish again.”
Mrs. Laura you keep on fishing. We’re all proud of you for your diligent effort to catch “the big fish.”
